Bases 2–36 · exact integers
Convert binary to hexadecimal exactly
Translate a complete signed base-2 integer into uppercase hexadecimal without grouping assumptions, padding, or truncated machine words.
Binary to hexadecimal worked example
Why 11111111₂ becomes FF₁₆
- Because 16 = 2⁴, split the binary digits from the right into groups of four.
- Map each group directly: 1111₂ is F₁₆, so 1111 1111 becomes F F.
- If the left group is short, add conceptual leading zeros for grouping: 1101100 becomes 0110 1100, then 6C. The canonical result omits that padding.
This is integer notation, not text bytes or a fixed-width bit pattern. A negative input keeps its minus sign; without a word width the result is not two’s-complement.
